Manny is alive, well, & back in Athens! also, Alanna is here!

In fact, I am alive, as well is friend Alanna, who is here in Athens with me this week for U of Michigan’s Spring Break. She got here on Sunday, February 24, and she leaves very early tomorrow (Friday) morning at 5:00am Greek time. It’s been a blast here with her—it’s so surreal having a person that I actually know in GREECE with me! She’s been staying at the girls’ apartment building, which is a half block away from where I’m staying. She’s been getting along very well with all the girls, which is awesome. When she got here on Sunday, I met her at the airport, then we took a “mini”-tour of Athens, as I took her to see the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which she was flabbergasted by, and then I walked her around and showed her Syndagma Square and the Parliament Building, the Plaka area, Ermou Street (the 5th most expensive shopping street in Europe), the National Gardens, the street with all the goofy-looking foustanella-wearing Greek army, the original marble Olympic Stadium, and finally the Pangrati area where I’m staying. It may have been a *little* overwhelming for her, but we had to combat her jetlag with a vengeance! The next few days, she’s been hanging out with this other girl named Erin that is visiting another girl in my program this week, so she’s had a companion while we’ve been in class ‘n’ stuff. Alanna came to the National Archaeology Museum with us for one of our classes, and after that she went to visit the Acropolis (or Acropolypse, as she likes to pronounce it?).

Yesterday we went to the Glyfada area of Athens to all the beaches. This is the same place I went about 3 weeks to a month ago, also when I went bowling. After we hung out at the beach yesterday, Alanna and the other girls shopped and whatnot, and then we bought Grecian McDonald’s, where Alanna got a Greek specialty: “The McFarm” which is a pork burger (it’s not bad, actually!). She also took a lovely picture of the little piece of America in Greece, a.k.a. the street corner which had McDonald’s, KFC, and Pizza Hut in Glyfada. Last night, Alanna, Ariste & Sophie (my other two friends from Michigan who are studying in Greece, in Athens and Thessaloniki), and 3 of Aristes’ friends from Michigan, all went out to this nice tavernaki (little taverna) in Pangrati as a “Michigan Dinner”. It was most excellent being with Michigan people and also being on the other side of the world!

Right now, Alanna is in the Plaka area of Athens, shopping for some sort of European boots that she “MUST find!” I believe she is planning on meeting our class at the Ancient Agora at 1:15pm as well, which should be pretty sweet! Tonight we are planning on hitting up the Carnival Festival in Athens (which is being celebrated all over Greece today). It should be amazing! Alanna will then take the bus to the airport around 1am and fly out… this week flew by, but I’m so happy she came to visit me (and also bring me some extra shirts, some crunchy peanut butter, Macaroni & Cheese [they have neither crunchy PB nor M&C in Greece!], and a travel bag that I forgot at home)!

Don’t worry, I did not forget about my 5-day trip to the Peloponnese from last week. My next post will be all about that trip, along with all the pictures from each of the 5-days I will upload this weekend (at the new high-speed internet cafĂ© I found a little while back). I was also busy writing my first paper from across the Atlantic during the beginning of this week for my Archaeology class. Luckily that’s done, but unfortunately I have two more papers due on Monday, both for my Philosophy class. Hurray!

…With hope of updates and pictures to be more frequent,

SNOW in Athens?!?! pictures!

Apparently, I brought a little bit of Michigan with me to Greece this past weekend...

In the pics, note that I went to two different churches on Sunday looking to attend liturgy, and services at both churches were canceled due to the snow, and the fact that the Greeks don't know how to handle it! Also in the pics, note the crazy guy who playing in the snow covered bushes.... very weird, goofy guy! haha...

SNOW... in Greece?!?!?? & pictures from Corinth

So, it's been SNOWING these past 2 days here in Athens, Greece. Yes... Greece. Snow. Blizzards. Ice. Slipping. Throwing snowballs at each other. Cold.

On FRIDAY it was in the 60s Fahrenheit! And on Saturday night, it snowed. And on Sunday, it snowed some more. It's like I'm back in Michigan and I didn't even know it! What the heck...... Also, church services were canceled... I went to 2 different churches, and one was canceled because of the snow, and the other was canceled because the psalti (chanter) didn't show up.

Today, Monday, we have a "snow day", but not a true one... as all the Greek classes are canceled at the Athens Centre, but our other two classes are still happening (Philosophy and Byzantine History).

I have my first paper this semester--it's in Archaeology and it's due next Tuesday.

Speaking of Tuesday, tomorrow we are leaving on a 5-day trip for the Peloponnese and will return to Athens on Saturday evening.

On Sunday, Alanna, my friend for Michigan, is coming to stay with me for 6 days until Friday for Michigan's Spring Break! It's almost here already!

For now, I will leave you with the links to the pictures.

ENJOY!

Corinth

Well, I’m back in Athens after the day trip to the ancient sites of Corinth & Eleusis! We got on the bus at 7:30am this morning, and returned around 5:00pm this evening. It was a beautiful trip… the places were awesome. We first went to Eleusis, and walked around the site for about an hour and a half and visited the museum that was on-site. Next, we drove to Corinth and checked out the museum on-site (which was amazing, by the way—wait ‘til I post the pictures!) and then walked around the site for about a half-hour. We took a break for lunch, and a couple of us went to this pizza place that was most excellent… they made the pizza with the cheese Greeks use for saganakis (kasseri cheese)! It was sooooo good. We got the good ole fashioned meat-lovers :) After the Corinth site, we took the bus up to the site of the Akrocorinth, which is basically the Acropolis of Corinth. Jessica, Carrie, and I hiked up to the very top, which we saw what remains of the Temple of Aphrodite. While at this site, one of the guys in our group Patrick Chung had to give a site report on the Akrocorinth—he did an amazing job and we all learned a lot! I have to do a site report for the last site we will venture to at the end of April, Marathon, so I have some time to prepare. We drove back to Athens, and I passed out for a couple hours, then took my 15 lb. bag of laundry to the Laundromat where they do all your washing and drying for you… thanks goodness. I love that place! They actually have DRYERS! It’s so un-Greek-like, alas, I will have my full wardrobe available to me before our group ventures off on the Peloponnese trip which starts Tuesday and ends Saturday.

I believe that that is all for now! Kalo sabbatokyriako (have a good weekend)!

This upcoming weekend will consist of visiting Corinth on Friday, I will return to Athens for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and then finally I will be on a 5-day trip to the Peloponnese visiting Sparta and the like until next Saturday!

And for those of you who heard about there being an earthquake in Athens, I am ok! I didn't feel it, and nobody else that I've talked to heard of it or felt it, although I heard in the news it was supposed to be a strong one. Apparently I was sleeping while it came! :)

Enjoy the pics!

The Argolid, Mycenae, & Nauplio

Over this past weekend I visited Mycenae and the Argolid with the group. It was a pretty good field trip, minus the fact that it was cold, windy, and raining all three days. We took a bus to the site; it was only a 2.5 hour trip from Athens. I never really realized how close some of these areas in Greece are to each other… I really got some perspective when I was talking to Demetra (one of the ladies who works at the Athens Centre and went on the trip with us) and she said it can take less than three hours to drive to Northern Greece, and she found it quite amazing how much time it takes to drive to some places in the U.S.— one of the people on this study abroad session said it takes him 14 hours just to drive to the University of Wisconsin from their home in Washington D.C., and we also gave an example that it takes 5 hours just to FLY from the east coast to the west coast… and Demetra said if you drive 5 hours in any direction in Greece you’ll either hit water, or another country! It was hard for her to fathom… Anyway, I got some pretty good pictures at the sites (links to the pics will be available in my next entry). We stayed in the city called Nauplio, ate at a couple excellent restaurants, got some AMAZING gelato from this awesome Italian dessert place (3 days in a row, mind you), went to Epidaurus, saw some Thollos tombs, saw the Lion Gate, went to Lerna and Tiryns, visited the Palamidi Castle, and unfortunately did NOT see Frankthi Cave because the weather was too crappy.

Back in Athens, 19 out of 24 of us got together and had a “cooking class” with Demetra Monday evening. She taught us how to make tzatziki (cucumber) sauce, pastitsio (Greek lasagna), Greek salad, garlic sauce, and meatballs. I was on tzatziki duty, along with two other girls named Hannah, and another girl named Marianne. It was gooooodddd…. along with everything else our group made! The only downside was that we started making stuff around 5:30pm, and didn’t get to eat around 9:00 or 9:30 I think…. but man, it was worth the wait. I’d really enjoy doing that again—at least most of us know how to make these wonderful dishes again… hopefully!

I’ve finalized my Spring Break plans (March 7 through 16)!! I will be traveling to Italy (Rome, Naples) and visiting with my friend Carrie from U of Michigan who is actually studying abroad in Florence, Italy for the year, but is taking a weekend trip out to Naples and I’m meeting up with her and her friends, and then I will be traveling to France (Marseilles, Paris) for the 2nd half of my Spring Break to visit Hayley, my other friend from Michigan who is studying abroad in Marseilles for the year. It will be cool trying to remember 4 years of studying French in high school! Hopefully this immersion of Greek won’t block my brain too much… although I’ve tried to practice a little bit of French the other day, and I said “Je veux na paei sto…” …crap… half French, half Greek. I guess we’ll see what happens, come the 2nd week of March :) Tomorrow, all I have to do is purchase my reserved plane tickets at the travel agency in Athens!

My new Greek class has commenced as of Monday afternoon – it is with the same teacher, and the same two other guys, plus one more new guy who is from Oxford, UK. He speaks pretty good Greek has a rather heavy British-English accent (when he speaks English, obviously). I have advanced from level III to level IV in the Athens Centre Greek Accelerated program… I’ve also advanced up to the 2nd year Greek book (the one I used sophomore year of college in Modern Greek class). This class will be even more helpful than the last one… Having taken the same class using the same book previously, it helps a lot to take it again because it refreshes my memory, and at least now I am forced to use the Greek in everyday situations, and it should stick in my head a lot better :) Meanwhile, class tomorrow is cancelled (we have class every day Mon-Fri 1:00-4:00 unless otherwise noted) because of some sort of strike in Athens that will prevent some other students from getting to class. There seems to be a strike every week, it seems.

On another note, tonight I went bowling again with the same other 5 guys that I did last week (Matt, Sasha, Kurt, and the 2 Pats), but this time we didn’t go to Glyfada—we found another better, cheaper bowling alley in Athens. It’s actually part of a complex that connects with a movie theater, a karaoke place, and a bunch of restaurants. Exciting! I bought some movie theater popcorn…… mmmmmmm….. the first REAL popcorn I’ve eaten since I’ve left the States. I bowled significantly better this time… We bowled 4 games-- I bowled a 94 and an 80. I don’t really feel like mentioning the other two scores at this time. !!

Anywho, time to do some reading, and then go to sleep!

Byzantine Museum

Earlier today my class and I went to the Byzantine Museum of Athens with our Byzantine History professor. It was the first time I’ve been there (seeing as how it was closed when Mike and I tried to visit in 2005), and it was one of the best museums I’ve ever been to! …basically because I don’t normally enjoy going to museums, but this time I was career-interested in most of the artifacts. They had some pieces of old churches from the Byzantine Empire, lots of iconography, altar tables, seals for Holy Bread, some pottery, and garments that the common people and the priests wore. I will post the links to the pictures in my next blog entry as soon as the internet is available long enough for uploading…

Oooo today we finally got our passports back! The Athens Centre (the program I’m studying abroad) took all of our passports a couple of weeks ago so they could extend our visas for studying in Greece for a total of 4 months – a regular Greek visa is only valid for 3 months of stay. This is good, because now I can finally cash some of my traveler’s checks at the bank.

My Greek class is coming to an end. …what’s that, you say? You thought I just started taking it like 2 weeks ago? You would be correct! I started taking the 5-day-a-week class one week after it commenced, and this Friday is the last day. Actually, I won’t even be able to go to it on Thursday or Friday because on Thursday our Archaeology professor is taking our class to the Ancient Agora (we’ve already been, but he’s taking us for different reasons than the Philosophy prof did) during the same time as my Greek class, and Friday we are departing for our second weekend trip… to the Argolid! (when I find out more about it, I will post the info! So far all I know is that we’re taking a long bus ride there—not a boat this time). The moral of the story is that my last class for Greek is tomorrow: Wednesday, 5 February, 2008! …fear not, a new session of the same class (but possibly a different teacher and other new students) will start up on Monday, 11 February so I will still be able to improve my Greek communication skills….. hopefully :)

So apparently the University of Michigan hockey team has not been doing so hot as of late, losing and tying to the Spartans, and tying twice to Northern Michigan… what the heck! Maybe I should come back home and re-motivate them how a #1 team plays!! D’oh…. I miss Michigan hockey…. and Red Wings hockey (also the #1 team in the NHL)…….

OH! ANYBODY NOTICE HOW THE PATRIOTS SOMEHOW LOST THE SUPER BOWL ON SUNDAY?!!?! DID SOMEBODY FORGET TO TELL THEM THAT THE FIRST 18 GAMES OF THE SEASON WERE NOT QUITE AS IMPORTANT AS THE VERY LAST ONE, AND THEREFORE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THEIR HARDEST DURING THAT LAST ONE—YOU KNOW, THE SUPER BOWL!?!? I watched the game at the bar with 6 other guys from my program, and a bunch of other random American study abroaders found this bar for the game, too, so we all watched it until 5:15am… I must say, the game was most excellent. Despite the outcome, I’m still happy I stayed up for it because it was very exciting… Patriots winning for the majority of the game, with under two minutes in the game the Giants drive into the end zone to take the lead and hold on for the Super Bowl win as Brady didn’t have enough magic in the tank for his usual “time to shine” during the Patriots absolutely last drive of their “perfect” season. Either way, it was fun…. Watching the game on the satellite channel “Super Sports 5” was kind of weird—it wasn’t the FOX feed, they used the NFL Network feed… except they didn’t have the normal broadcasters, they had GREEK-speaking broadcasters (during the other NFL Playoff games we’ve watched on the Super Sports channels, they had the regular Americans doing the commentating), AND we didn’t see any American commercials during the broadcast. The next day I found them online and watched a couple of ‘em… We WERE able to watch the halftime show (surprisingly), but actually this other guy Pat and I went to get some food and missed most of it—I saw part of Tom Petty’s performance. While we watched the game, most of the other guys in our group were Giants fans, and there was only one other Patriot fan besides me (like I alluded to in my previous blog entry, I’m more a Michigan-alum-Tom-Brady fan—the NFL is not my favorite sport) and they were practically crying when the Patriots had just scored their final points, because they didn’t have too much faith that their Giants and Manning could successfully drive in a final touchdown and win (one guy Sasha said, “Well, it was a good season…”). Actually I’m not too pissed that the Giants won, because now I don’t have to listen to most of the guys whine for the next week about how the Patriots cheated and won the Super Bowl…. sadly :(

Time to do my last Greek assignment before “the new term” begins….

Super Bowl Sunday

This weekend was extremely fun and extremely awesome! On Saturday, a bunch of the other guys and I went to Glyfada (a southern suburb of Athens on the coast) via the Tram. It was about an hour ride… we checked out the beach there… we got there in time for the sunset… it was so amazing. We also found this restaurant that served food that was particularly good – regular Greek-style stuff, but I think I liked it better because they served it in bigger portions :) After that, we found a bowling alley and played a couple of games. I, as usual, bowled a sub-par game… I got a 65 the first time, and a 68 the second game. I opted out of playing the third game…. to go play foosball with one of the other guys! I beat him in that pretty good, so it boosted my confidence a little.. then we played air hockey, and he beat me. So then I bought some ice cream and it was gooooooodddd….. mmmmm.

After that, we took the Tram back to downtown Athens and went home. Then we got together with the rest of the group and tried to go find a bar in the Psirri area of Athens (where all the nightlife is), but it took us approximately 2 hours to find a place that we all agreed on… Eventually we split off into smaller groups and went our separate ways, but somehow we all ended up back in one club at the end of the night. It was an interesting night, to say the least…

Today we had a first (of hopefully many!) potluck dinner gathering at the girls’ place. Mmmmmmmm soooo much foooood…… everybody made something amazing! And I had a little bit of everything! On a side note, I think I’ve gained somewhere between 5 and 10 pounds already on this study abroad experience, and I’ve only been here a month! It stinks not being able to work out… I will try and play some soccer with everyone when we get a bunch o’ people together, and maybe I should start doing sit-ups. Poor chubby Manny :(

Right now it is 11:40pm, and tonight, at 1:30am is the Super Bowl! I’m trying to stay awake, although I’m contemplating taking a nap before the game, seeing as it won’t be over until around 5:00, 5:30am most likely… I did my readings for our first class tomorrow (which luckily isn’t until 1pm), and I’m going to finish my Greek homework… oh what to do… I’ve finished my Season 9 DVD set of Everybody Loves Raymond…. sad :( luckily I still have an unwatched DVD set remaining of the Simpsons – season 8! Woooo! I’ll have to start re-watching the Simpsons seasons that I brought (seasons 5, 6, 7, and 8) soon, along with watching the Simpsons Movie multiple upon multiple times!!!

My friend from Fraser & U. of Michigan – Alanna – confirmed with me that she will be visiting me in Greece during Michigan’s Spring Break during the last week of February!!!! Hurray!!!!! I’m so exited, it’ll be so fun having her here!!!!

And, now to sum up the latest installment of my randomly-organized blog entry, GO TOM BRADY & THE PATRIOTS!!!!!!!! DO UNIV. OF MICHIGAN PROUD!! WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL!!!!

XPONIA POLLA, ELAINE!

First of all, I want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my sister Elaine!! The Big 2-6!!!

An update on the passing of the Bishop… on Wednesday after class, I walked down to Syntagma Square to find the church where the Bishop was being laid out. I got in a line along with a multitude of others who wished to visit the body of the Bishop. I got in line—which extended with a mass of people around the whole block around the church and down the street—just before 5:00pm… the line moved about a half street after about 5 HOURS!!!!! I conveniently decided to exit the line at 10:00pm, having gone basically nowhere. I felt bad for all the other millions of people who were probably going to wait ANOTHER 6 or 7 hours… and the scary part was—a lot of people got in line behind me, even at 10:00pm! Ridiculous…

The next day (Thursday) was the Funeral, which took place at the cemetery, which is directly behind my apartment complex. We indeed had classes, as they were not cancelled. Instead, I had my Greek class even earlier than usual – 9:00am – which was hard to wake up for, but I did. After Greek, I had a free hour before my next class, so I tried to walk down to where the funeral was taking place, but the police had the streets roped off, and I could not walk any further. There were a lot of people EVERYWHERE, so many extra cars in places that they should not be parked, and a helicopter flying overhead (probably doing the news), but by 3:00pm, everything was back to normal.

Let’s see…. what else is going on? Not really too much else. I’ve been watching a lot of The Simpsons DVDs and Everybody Loves Raymond DVDs that I brought on the trip with me, as are my roommates. It’s nice to have brought a little something from home to remind me where I’m from… :)

Oh yeah, on Tuesday we went to the National Archaeological Museum for our Arts & Archaeology class. This is in fact the same museum that Mike and I went to in 2005 (again, I did not take any new pictures because everything looked the same as when we took pictures then). It was pretty cool… I felt a little bit smarter than the rest of the class, because I had remembered seeing a lot of the artifacts, and when the teacher called on me, I was relatively prepared to give an answer. It was cool seeing the Mask of Agamemnon, and pointing it out to everyone else :)

Also, this weekend is Super Bowl weekend (as I’m sure everybody knows). We will be able to watch it at this one bar that we frequent, as the owner has Satellite TV, and the Super Sports channel that we need to watch it (we have been able to watch all the NFL Playoff games there too on the SS channels). It’s going to be fun watching it in a different country… our group is planning on having a potluck-type dinner Sunday evening, and then we’ll all take naps afterwards and wake up in time to watch the game which will start at 1:30AM Monday morning. WOOO!

MANNY OUT!
